Castelgrande, Bellinzona

Tour a World Heritage-listed medieval castle and take in views of Bellinzona and the surrounding mountains at Castelgrande. Originally built to fortify the passageway to the Alps, the castle represents the largest and the lowermost of the three fortresses in the town. Walk the grounds and tour the tunnels of the structure that are the result of the extensive building projects undertaken by the Dukes of Milan in the 15th century. Watch an informational movie and tour a small exhibit upon entrance. Climb up the two towers for views of the surrounding Swiss landscape. There is no cost to enter; come prepared for stair-climbing and some tight spaces. Plan my Bellinzona trip by asking Inpirock to come up with tips and suggestions.

  • We travel with DaySaverPass in Switzerland (bought in 60 days). The first stop is Bellinzona. In the first version it was not in our route. But to the planned Shillion and Gruyere castles on the way (very, very) lay and Bellinzon. From the station about 10 minutes on foot and we are in Castelgrande! Admission is free to the fortress, we did not go to the museum. Climbed by elevator from the car park - thanks to colleagues from TripAdvisor. Three hours was enough only for this fortress. We walked all over the preserved wall and back on the underground part, climbed the tower, observation decks. Loved how planted the fortress on the ground. The wall blocked the whole valley! And then open the roads to the passes SanGottard and SanBernandino. It was impossible to pass without payment to our Italian ancestors Very many Russians, much more than Chinese tourists! As always sent postcards home and forth to Lucerne! Next time for the remaining two fortresses...

  • First castle as you look and go up the mountain. It has no parking of it's own so you can find places around. Then go to the old town side and take a lift all the way up or you can hike it. It's a ver...  more »

  • Castelgrande is an architectural marvel. It is absolutely worthy to be included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The modern intervention project by Aurelio Galfetti is a masterpiece. It was totally respectful of the old castle.
  • Beautiful castle on top a steep hill, you can take an elevator to the top. The best is that it is free of charge! Unless you want to visit the Museum (5 Swiss francs) and get inside the tower (5 sf). Not sure if the 5 Swiss francs cover both places of you have to pay separately.
