Trip Planner: Europe / Switzerland / Swiss Alps / Canton of Valais / Zermatt / Mountaineers' Cemetery
Head to the garden of St. Mauritius Church to see Mountaineers' Cemetery, dedicated to laying to rest the spirits of mountaineers and mountain guides. Read the tombstones that tell stories of hikers who died on Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn, and Breithorn. Mountaineers have been ascending the peaks since 1865, starting with the Matterhorn, and many of the early pioneers paved the way but did not return. A small cemetery. Well worth taking the time to read the inscriptions on the tombstones. Only a short walk from the Main Street.

A local cemetery, with a corner dedicated to mountaineers who lost their lives climbing the Matterhorn, the mountain which overlooks the town of Zermatt. Take a quiet walk here to commemorate their lives. Well-maintained and much-visited by the community.
A very sobering and even sad place to remember those who Chose to Climb the Matterhorn and lost their young lives. Many were in their teens and early twenties when they met their end, before their lives had truly begun. The graves of the original group that was led by Edward Whymper are here as well. They summited successfully in 1865 but met disaster on the way down. The cemetery is located behind St. Mauritius Catholic Church and is open 24/7. It is well maintained and a very interesting place to visit.
