Admire displays of Asian, African, American, and Oceanian art at Museum Rietberg, the only art museum of non-European cultures in the country. Housed in several historical buildings, the museum's core collection comes from a donation from Baron Eduard von der Heydt. Highlights from the Indian collection include the South Indian bronze of Shiva Nataraja, dating back to the Chola dynasty. The site also offers Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain sculpture and bronzes from the 3rd to 16th centuries, as well as paintings on paper, fabric, and palm leaf from the 12th to 19th centuries. The African collection showcases sculptures from the Dogon region in Mali and masks and figures from the Ivory Coast, as well as other areas. The China collection includes Ming dynasty pottery. You can take a public tour upon entry to the museum. Use public transportation to reach the site, as there are no public parking spaces nearby. Rare indeed to find a European museum devoted solely to non-Europe art, so it was great to happen across here. Over a few floors marvellous pieces from a number of continents are shown. Gorgeous...

Reviewing the place for the awesome small cafe that they have. We visited the cafe in summer wanting to try their picnic offer, but did not realise that you'll need to book at least 3 days before. The lady at the counter probably saw how disappointed we were and offered a picnic basket and mat for us, with the pastries and sandwiches on display, so we can have a pseudo 'picnic'. Really appreciate her going beyond her duty to make our experience better. The sandwiches and dessert were also absolutely delicious, and we enjoyed ourselves immensely with our first summer picnic experience in Switzerland. Highly recommend it but remember to book three days in advance!

Great exhibitions in a special underground museum. Located in a lovely park with old trees.
